Mātauranga & Hakomi

Mātauranga, traditional Maori wisdom and world-view, brings depth, relevance, and a universally accessible spirituality to the practice of Hakomi in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Alongside Hakomi’s Taoist foundations, mātauranga traditions weave together a rich tapestry of philosophical wisdom and practice. While they each tell different stories, they speak to the same truths. Mātauranga alongside the Hakomi principles provides a complementary experience; both provide and support insight into the exploration of ‘How do I stand in relation to these many realms?” This synergy creates a more holistic, culturally attuned, and spiritually enriched approach to healing and the Hakomi training experience.

Increasingly Aotearoa/NZ is being invited to consider the relevance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in the workplace and within communities. Developing mātauranga content within the Hakomi training actively acknowledges the living partnership anticipated by Te Tiriti and represents a meaningful and transformative integration of indigenous wisdom and contemporary therapeutic practice. Not only does this enhance our teaching it provides a pathway for Hakomi practitioners to create culturally sensitive, informed, and inclusive therapy. Learning through different cultural lenses assist us all to acknowledge, respect, and engage with difference, enabling us to work with diversity by fostering a deeper sense of trust and connection between ourselves and our clients. Further, it paves the way for a more effective and inclusive therapeutic landscape and the potential for profound healing at both individual and community levels.
